đź’ˇ Tip: use the Matrix view to build a prioritization matrix

In a recent forum exchange, a user was looking to build a prioritization matrix with a KANBAN view: the columns represented a score (1 to 5) and the goal was to display actions with the highest impact / highest priority first.

While waiting for the addition of a dedicated option to sort columns in the KANBAN view, there is an interesting workaround by using the Matrix view.

:bullseye: The need

  • An “impact” axis

  • A “priority” axis (or score 1–5)

  • Ability to visually identify “high impact / high priority” items.

:hammer_and_wrench: The solution with the Matrix view

  1. Create a Matrix view on your board.

  2. Assign your Impact field to one axis (X) and your Priority / Score field to the other (Y).

  3. The Matrix view automatically sorts both axes from smallest to largest.

  4. In the Matrix options, use the fields “X lower label” / “X higher label” and “Y lower label” / “Y higher label” to make reading clearer, for example:

    • X lower label : Low impact

    • X higher label : High impact

    • Y lower label : Low priority

    • Y higher label : High priority

You thus obtain a matrix that highlights, in the same quadrant, actions with high impact and high priority.

It’s not exactly the same visual as a KANBAN, but by playing with the axis labels and item display options, you can achieve a very readable prioritization view that is directly usable for arbitration.

Feel free to share your own matrix variants (impact / effort, value / risk, etc.) in this thread :backhand_index_pointing_down:
